Editor’s Note

In recognition of the worldwide importance of rice, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has designated 2004 as the International Year of Rice (IYR). This dedication of an International Year to a single crop is rare in the history of UNGA.

The Africa Rice Center (WARDA), which is solely dedicated to research and development activities on rice for Africa, is quite fittingly leading the IYR celebration in Africa in collaboration with its partners, as described in the article Africa celebrates the International Year of Rice.

Within 3 years of its introduction, the New Rice for Africa (NERICA) has become a household name in parts of Uganda, which is witnessing a growing NERICA boom. We present to you this amazing story in the article NERICA’s flying start in Uganda.

The crowning glory for WARDA’s NERICA achievement was the announcement in March of Dr Monty Jones as the co-laureate of the 2004 World Food Prize. WARDA’s felicitation to Dr Jones is highlighted in the News and Notes.
