Editor’s Note

A striking feature of the research-for-development work in the Africa Rice Center is the seamless integration between the activities carried out by scientists from the Center and those from the national programs with support from the networks and consortia convened by the Center. The other striking feature is that the Center scientists are ever willing to learn from farmers’ practices and experience and incorporate traditional wisdom into their research.

This combined approach brings out a great synergy that leads to remarkable results. The recent breakthrough by the Center scientists—the development of NERICAs for lowlands is a successful example of this combined approach. The story of this breakthrough is reported in the article Africa Rice Center makes another breakthrough.

Life at the Center is never at a standstill as you can judge from the News and notes, which gives you a glimpse of some of the major events that happened during this period.
