CGIAR King Baudouin Award

WARDA received the ‘Millennium’ edition of the CGIAR King Baudouin Award for the breakthrough in interspecific hybridization of rice, the development of the NERICAs and effective participatory approaches in technology dissemination. This award gave international recognition to WARDA’s achievements, and support to its ongoing drive for a massive upsurge in rice productivity within its mandate region.

The King Baudouin International Agricultural Research Award is keenly coveted. The biennial prize rewards “persons or organizations, irrespective of nationality, which have made a significant contribution to the development of the Third World, as also to solidarity and good relations between industrial and developing countries and between their peoples.” For the 2000 award, the CGIAR Technical Advisory Committee led by Emil Javier evaluated submissions from seven CGIAR Centers.
