The Consortium aims to enhance cooperation and complementarity among research and development institutions working with the common goal of intensifying the cultivation of inland valleys in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. Consortium members work together to characterize the constraints and technical needs for inland-valley development, develop improved low-cost water management systems, and test component agronomic technologies. In the first phase, each of these activities is conducted in 18 key sites selected as being representative of broader domains in Sub-Saharan Africa. In the second phase, three benchmark areas are selected: (1) in Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Mali, (2) on the border between Togo and Benin, and (3) in Ghana.
